Protocol A indicated blood will be withdrawn from the non-human primate study animals. However, the frequency of such blood withdrawals is not outlined in the protocol. Without this information, the IACUC will not be able to effectively determine if the proposed amount of blood withdrawn will exceed the maximum allowable amount as outlined in the facility SOP – Nonhuman Primates Withdrawal Limitations. A complete description of all proposed uses of study animals is necessary to ensure the procedures avoid or minimize discomfort, distress, and pain as in accordance with the animal welfare regulations. The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) should ensure that a proposal to conduct an animal activity includes a complete description of the proposed use of the animals.
